American Gold Eagle Proof 1 oz

Produced by the United States Mint as the official bullion coin of the US, the American Gold Eagle is a favorite among investors and collectors alike. Each American Gold Eagle Proof is 91.67% pure gold (22-karat), 3% silver, and 5.33% copper, resulting in a durable coin with a darker finish. The US government guarantees a value of $50 (USD) for each coin—but they are worth far more than that.

The number of Gold Eagle coins struck each year continues to decline. Only 7,000 were minted in 2020, compared to over 400,000 the first year of their release. Available in mint dates from 1986 to the present, the 1 oz. American Gold Eagle can be purchased in both Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) and proof versions.

The American Gold Eagle Design

The American Gold Eagle program started in 1986 and originally included coins in four weights: 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 oz. The US Mint has released a limited number of 1 oz. Gold Eagle coins every year since, excluding 2009, where the Platinum Eagle and Gold Buffalo replaced it.

The Gold Eagle coin still features the original design, which remains the same every year. The obverse (front) is a replica of the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin featuring Lady Liberty ringed by 50 stars. In her right hand, she holds a torch. In her left, an olive branch. Rays of light shine behind her, and the word “Liberty” is inscribed above her.

The production year is printed to her right. This date was in roman numerals on early Gold Eagle coins but has since been updated to standard numerals—the only change to the coin’s overall design since its release.

Designed by Miley Busiek, the coin’s reverse illustrates an eagle flying with an olive branch in his talons above a nest containing a second eagle with her wings wrapped around her young, representing the value of family to the American people.

The outer edge of the coin reads. “United States of America” on the top and “1 oz. Fine Gold ~ 50 Dollars” on the bottom. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (“From Many, One”) is printed to the left of the nest and “IN GOD WE TRUST” to the right. The rim of the coin is reeded.

American Gold Eagle proof coins are crafted with a detailed minting process to create a satin-like image on a shiny, mirror-like background. Proof coins are released in smaller batches, feature a “W” on the obverse, and come in a stunning, blue velvet presentation case.

Each coin is guaranteed for content, purity, and weight, making them eligible for inclusion in a Precious Metals IRA. In fact, they are the only collectible coins allowed in Individual Retirement Accounts in the US.

US Mint Refinery and Fabrication

The US Mint manufactures and distributes circulating, commemorative, and precious metal coins. Founded in April of 1792, the US Mint works to share and preserve our nation’s history in gold, silver, and other precious metals.

Gold discovered in the Sacramento Valley in 1848 started the rush that helped expand the US Mint. As a result, several branch locations and offices opened in addition to the original Mint in the then-capital of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Mint is the only manufacturer of legal tender in the US and is responsible for producing all coins used in circulation, driving trade and commerce. The Mint also produces Congressional Gold Medals and silver and gold bullion coins.
