Silver Austrian Philharmonic 1 oz Coins

Description

The Silver Austrian Philharmonic coin is popular with bullion investors worldwide—it is the best-selling silver bullion coin in Europe. It was introduced in 2008 and was met with impressive demand, selling over 7.75 million coins in the first year. By its fifth year of production, over 50 million bullion coins had sold from this series.

The Austrian Philharmonic Design

This particular bullion coin is constructed of 0.999 Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) silver, weighing a troy ounce. It has a face value of 1,50 Euros and is guaranteed by the government of Austria. The Silver Austrian Philharmonic 1 oz. bullion coin has an identical design to the gold and platinum variants, designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, except it has a smooth edge. There are currently no design variants.

The gold Austrian Philharmonic coin was the first to be released in 1989. Until 2007, the 15th Anniversary Edition of the Vienna Philharmonic bullion, dubbed “Big Phil,” was the largest and highest domination coin in existence with a value of €100,000. Only 15 were produced. The Austrian Mint released subsequent anniversary coins in 2009 (20 years, 20 ounces) and 2014 (25 years, 1/25 ounce).

The platinum version of the Austrian Philharmonic coin is even newer than the silver, being released in 2016.

The obverse (front) side of all three coin options features an image of the Wiener Musikverein or Great Organ in the Concert Hall. The reverse shows a collection of wind and string instruments commonly used by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, including a cello in the center, surrounded by four violins, a harp, a French horn, and a bassoon.

Each silver bullion coin is inscribed with “Republik Osterreich” which is the German name for Austria, along with “1 Unze Feinsilber,” meaning 1 ounce of fine silver, and “1,50 Euro” as the denomination. Coins are available individually but more commonly sold in bulk, being available in 20-coin tubes or massive “monster” boxes containing 25 tubes (500 coins total).

Each Silver Austrian Philharmonic bullion coin is guaranteed in purity and quality. The attractive design of this coin makes it extremely collectible in North America, Europe, and Japan. The Austrian Mint has an extensive history with silver, which aids in this coin’s consistent design.

The Austrian Mint

The Munze Osterreich, or Austrian Mint, is an expert in coin production and one of the world’s top coin producers. It is operated out of their Vienna facility and is responsible for producing circulation coins, blanks for other countries, and collector coins and medals, but primarily produces euro circulation coins used throughout the country.

The Austrian Mint was originally funded by Richard the Lionheart in 1194, who paid Duke Leopold V of Austria 12 tonnes of silver to escape a year of incarceration.

The Duke chose to strike the coins from this payment, which turned into the foundation of the country’s Mint. Austria’s Mint has acquired centuries of minting techniques, with a consistently round shape being introduced in 1830 by using a closed collar during the minting process. Austria’s traditional minting techniques are still used today, though in a more modernized way.
